Sherman, Beloved LA Park Ranger Horse, Retires After 16 Years of Service
After a distinguished 16-year career with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Sherman, the beloved equine officer of the Park Rangers Mounted Unit, officially retired on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. The heartfelt farewell ceremony took place at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, where colleagues, city officials, and the community gathered to honor his years of service.
Sherman had become a familiar and comforting presence across LA’s parks, helping keep the city’s open spaces safe for visitors. Captain James Rodriguez of the Park Rangers Mounted Patrol reflected, "Sherman was a steadfast partner, not only for the officers but for the entire community. His calm demeanor and reliability were traits we came to rely on daily. It’s hard to imagine the unit without him."
Throughout his career, Sherman played an integral role in both patrolling the parks and engaging with the community. Officer Emily Torres, one of Sherman’s longtime handlers, shared her thoughts: "He wasn’t just a working horse—he was a symbol of trust and safety. People would approach him with smiles, and he was always patient, even with the youngest park visitors. He was truly one of a kind."
During the event, Ranger Sean Klecker and Jennie Nevin, Executive Director of Business Development & Communications, were featured in a segment by LA City View News. Deputy Superintendent Martha Juarez also celebrated Sherman’s legacy, remarking, "Sherman will always be a cherished member of our team. His service made a lasting impact, not just within our department, but on the countless families who met him over the years."
With his official duties now behind him, Sherman will be enjoying a well-deserved retirement on a large private farm in Kentucky. There, he’ll have ample space to roam and relax, surrounded by other retired horses. "We’re thrilled to know that Sherman will spend his retirement in comfort, enjoying the peace he’s earned after so many years of dedicated service," Captain Rodriguez added.
Though his presence will be missed in LA’s parks, Sherman’s legacy as a loyal and gentle protector of the community will continue to be remembered.
