“And my life was never the same…”

A Spotlight on Polo Life at LAEC by guest writer Madliene Haim

I brought my horses to the Los Angeles Equestrian Center as the pandemic was winding down. Having been a horse enthusiast since childhood, my passion only intensified with age. The equestrian world often feels like a solitary journey, but that changed when I discovered polo.

I took a chance on an introductory clinic at HYT Polo for a mere $50, thinking, “Why not?” That single lesson was a game-changer—I was instantly hooked. The joy I experienced was like nothing else, yet the cost of pursuing polo was daunting. The introductory session’s price did not reflect the true expense of the sport. Nevertheless, I was determined. To fund my passion, I took on a second job at Fat Dog restaurant in North Hollywood and even persuaded the owner to try polo. Like me, she was enamored after just one lesson.

What truly distinguishes polo is its vibrant social scene, coupled with the exhilaration of the game. I forged deep friendships, forming a close-knit circle that became an integral part of my life. Polo reshaped my destiny—I met my husband through the sport and was inspired to advance my career to indulge in more playing time.

My polo community was my pillar when I competed in the Mongol Derby last August, the world’s longest and most grueling horse race, held in Mongolia on semi-wild Mongolian horses. Not only did a member of my polo family sponsor my entry, but several others offered their horses for the six-month training I did leading up to the race. There were an extensive amount of vaccinations recommended for the race. When my fellow players found out I couldn’t afford to get them all, they pooled money for me to get the remainder. Pro tip: getting rabies and yellow fever together is rough.

Every day, my heart swells with gratitude for finding my tribe. I’m so excited to be participating in reintroducing polo to the Equidome. I invite you to share in this joy during the Equidome Polo Challenge at LAEC on July 26th starting at 6pm.
